Arrived in Harbour at East London about 4 P.M. Town small & scattered on each side of the river. Scattered pretty well along the coast. Several large ships in the Harbour. Two other Troop ships and a hospital ship. A dredging ship(kate) working in the Harbour. Country more promising looking. More level though streaks of bare sand through it. Unloaded the Royal Scots & their rifles & baggage's. They went off in a Tug Boat in very rough sea. Rifle dropped on my left ear & cut it a little. Nothing serious. Cap't seems proud of his men. The Major seems a very fine officer. 12 of us went on guard at 6 P.M. for 24 hrs. 2 on 4 hrs off. Saw several whales close to the boat.
