Diary

April 8 - Had a better night's sleep so felt better. Making good time on the road. Reached Gap No. 1 at 10 a.m.and took to sleighs. Found the roads very bad; for a few miles; deep snow, but got better as we went. Some places snow three feet deep, other places quite bare. All day. Reached railway contractor's log camp where they had tea prepared for us. All very hungry, having had no dinner. After tea changed horses and drove on. Reached end of the first gap, 45 miles, at 2:30 in the morning. All glad to get over so quickly, but so cold. Made the best of it around the fires that had been lighted for us by railway men, and in the open bush.
