June 6 - Put in a dull day doing nothing. Nothing in orders indicating any moves. We are just doing garrison duties. Drill 10 to 12 a.m. Drill 2 to 4 p.m. But evening orders came suddenly as follows: "The Midland Battalion, under their commanding officer Col. A.T.H. Williams, will move off tomorrow morning at full strength and proceed to Frog Lake, scene of the late massacre, as the Indians in this vicinity are still causing trouble and must be subdued." Sgd, [signed] Middleton, general officer commanding. Ominous words. Marching orders. That meant action.
