July 9 - Made a fast run and reached Grand Rapids at 6:30 p.m. On our boat, the "Northwest", we had the Queen's Own with us. Two regiments on each boat and there were four boats. Grand Rapids, at the head of Lake Winnipeg, we would begin lake travel and river boats can't stand any rough water. So from here the boat captains would be a bit anxious. The boats are named the "Northwest", the "Marquis", the "Baroness" and the "Alberta". The old "Northcote" got such a battering up at Batoche that it was still under repairs.
