Was on guard from 2 to 4 A.M. 18 of us with the Cap't went out scouting. Went through 2 or 3 Boer farms. Stopped at one old fellow's place but had a pass he showed the Serg't. It was sad to see the family. The old fellow had a crape on his hat. Cap't's horse fell on his back in the ditch. Went back as rear guard afternoon. Got to Parade Kop at 3 P.M. Pitched tents to sleep in because it looked like rain. Took horses over a mile to water. Parade Kop only a small place with a station and a store and a few houses. We carry 50 rounds of rifle ammunition and 15 rounds for revolver.
