June 1 - Morning cloudy and cool. Boats on the move up-river by 7:30 a.m. nearing Fort Pitt. At noon two scouts hailed us from the north shore saying Big Bear and his band of Indians had retreated north into bad lands of sloughs and muskeg. "Never get him now," some said. Arrived at Fort landing in evening and pitched camp. Found Fort Pitt in ruins and burned to the ground. It was a desolate spot
