Letter from Private Lewis

Mrs. A. Kennedy has received a letter from her mother who lives in Toronto, and in this letter just received from her brother, Edward Lewis, who went out with the first contingent. We believe he once lived here. He was in the great battle of Langemark, and did his part in preventing the Germans from reaching Calais.
"We have had news from dear Ed. Flo had a letter, and he is in the hospital doing well. He was shot through the neck. Another bullet went right through his right shoulder coming out at the middle of his back. His comrade was killed and Ed. had to take his place, and change on the evening, April 23. At about 6 a.m. he was wounded, and he lay on the field until 8 p.m. the next evening. A bugler boy came to give him first aid, and before he (the boy,) had time to remove his kit from his back he was shot through the head, dying instantly. Ed. says he will never forget it. When he gets a little stronger he will write a fuller letter. He is in 2nd Southern General Hospital, Bristol."
