France,
March 28/17
Dear Lillian:

I found a lot of mail waiting when we came out but none from you. Aunt Bessie's letter was in the bunch and I shall write her in a few days. I had two letters and a box from home with a cake in it. I was pretty hungry when we came out and cleaned the cake up in no time.

This last was my first trip to the front line and I had quite an interesting time. I didn't get much sleep for a few days and was glad to get out for a rest. The last day in it rained nearly all day and my coat got soaked. Then it got covered with mud which also soaked in. I've been scraping and brushing ever since we came back and have most of the mud off now.

One day last week Laurie Gass came to see me. He met one of our officers up in the line and came to the trench with him. The next day I got away for a few hours and went over to see him at his battery. I had a letter from Elsie yesterday and a nice pair of socks. I still have a good supply on hand, and in the last letter from home they said they were getting some more knit for me.

We have just time to make the bed before lights out so must close

Love to all,

Reg.

Yours of the 10th received since this was written. Shall write again when the box arrives.

R.
