Dear Gwen & Jim, (& Francis)

Many thanks for your letter of the second. I picked it up on the 13th when I arrived here. Forgive me for not answering sooner but we are being shoved around quite a lot. All kit is written off when you've been to the far east so we had to take these R.A.F. monkey-suits because we had nothing but mouldy battle dress. It was just like joining up all over again. Clothing, medical examinations, X-ray, documentation and numerous other things for the records. I guess you've read the letter I wrote to Mom & Dad so I won't repeat a lot of it. I'm glad to hear the baby is fine & I hope everybody else is too. I am not yet in the pink of condition but if I look after myself, this English weather won't hit me too hard. I don't know what the leave situation is or how long I'll be here, but I'd like to stay here another six months at the least. The jog situation sounds good but the housing sounds grim. I'm not sure about my old job. Aeroplanes, with their minimum of grease & oil are a lot more healthy that the Coke Ovens. I was talking to an old Englishman about the effects of the war on men & he said I looked about 35. Grim, eh? Well I've got to go now. I'll write again soon. --
Joe.
