Dear Mom & Dad,

I received yours of the twelfth yesterday and I started to answer it but found I didn't have time. I'm glad to hear you got that picture okay. I guess it could have been better. I'll go again when I get a chance, although I don't know when that will be. They won't tell us when we are going to Naples but I hope to get a 48 before I go. I don't know what the score is regarding Margaret. I'm beginning to think I should forget all about settling down for a few years yet, or at least till I get home. Surely anyone who wonders why some of us have to stay over so long, has read of the occupational force. Even if I wasn't classed as that, I wouldn't get home for maybe a year because of my repat number and shortage of shipping. I'd love to be home again but I can't kick because I only came over last year and some boys with two or three years in are still waiting around Bournemouth and Torquay. We who were in S.E.A.C. should get some consideration but we don't. I hope I go to Naples soon, because it's no good here. Your mention of Chatty brought back a lot of memories. I'll bet she's something to look at now. I thought she was tops when she was 12 and I was 16. You took a dim view of our friendship at the time, didn't you? I've never gone with one girl very long ever since I "got the axe" from her. So, she's not married yet, eh? But then she's only about 18, though I'll bet she looks much older. I'm sorry to hear you'll be alone this Christmas. This will be my third Xmas, New Year's, and birthday, in barracks in some isolated spot. I'll be looking forward to a parcel. I'm afraid you'll have to do my buying again this year Mom. I may have trouble getting even cards this year. I'll close now because I've got to battle with this blankety-blank stove and it's getting colder out. Your loving son, Joe.
