Shorncliffe,
August 23, 1916

Dear Violet,

I just came back from London night before last and found your letter waiting for me with the very welcome $10 in it. Although it was too late for my leave it will be very handy just the same as I won't draw any pay for a month and goodness only knows where we will be by that time as things begin look as if we will be moving soon. I have only received one parcel from home since we arrived in England but I heard to-day that they were holding them in Canada. Yesterday afternoon our Colonel presented the one of our sargeants with the DCM which he had won in the South African war. They thought him killed in South Africa. In one of my letters from home they said Art had gone to France But while I was on my leave the boys said he had been down to see me with Bob Action last Sunday. So I am going to look around and see if I can find him. I intend to go to Otterpool to-morrow night where the 98th. To-day I received a parcel of Sunday Worlds from Grace. And you can send me that silk shirt if you want to. As I intend to write to mother yet I will close now.

P.S. Don't know whether you are still at Jordan yet but will take a chance and send this there.
