Canadian Army (Overseas)
26th. August 1942.

Dear Undie,

It is with a sad heart that I write to tell you that Ernie is missing after the Dieppe raid. It seems impossible to obtain any knowledge of his fate as most of the boys in his detachment are missing and those who were fortunate to return do not remember seeing him after they landed.

Ernie was selected to go with this special detachment on a very important job. He went as a soldier willing and keen a man who we may all be proud of. His keen humour, happiness and fine outlook a life has always been an inspiration to all his pals. No finer soldier could a father expect of his son.

Undie I am unable to say whether he is a prisoner of war, wounded or killed. I only wish I could tell you, that information is scarce. I hope and pray that he is a prisoner of war without wounds, but we will have to wait until the Germans release the names.

Please convey to Mrs. Underwood my sympathy and tell her I have not given up hope. He is simply listed as Missing.

Buster is getting on well, he has a grand disposition and so well liked by all his pals. I know he is going to miss Ernie so much, as they were always together.

With kindest regards to Mrs. Underwood and yourself.

Yours Sincerely

B. Russell Kerr
