NANAIMO BOY TO GET THE MILITARY MEDAL

Mr. W.J. Crowe of this city is in receipt of a letter from his adopted son, conveying the good news that, though he is now in hospital at Buxton, he has been recommended for the military medal. Pte. Crowe-Swords is a veteran of the South African war having been one of the three from Nanaimo who served through that campaign. The letter is as follows:

Dear Dad: You must overlook the lateness of this little note for I am back to bed with a heavy fever and a bad heart. I suppose the result of the awful experience of being blown up. However I think it is only one of those relapses one has to look forward to in cases of this kind. Besides my hips, knees, ankles and shoulder were dislocated, and my heart slightly displaced.

I received your parcel O.K. yesterday and I can assure you I appreciated your kindness for sending it, it came just at a time when a few little dainties were welcome, particularly the tobacco.

I might say that for work that I had done at the firing line, and which I thought was only my duty, I have just found out that I was recommended for the Military Medal, a very distinguished decoration for bravery. I just received word also that it has been granted and I will receive it in due course. Not so bad. What do you think? Will tell you more about it when I write again. I am not supposed to sit up much. So with best wished and luck. BOB.
