Dear Mother =--

I see by to-day’s paper that poor John is killed in action. How quick he was to go. I have been expecting a letter from him every day but I did not get any.

The first I heard of it was when Dicky Cornish (who is an orderly) for Major [?] came into the tent and said did you hear about John and I said “no” and he said well I won’t tell you then and no more was said for I thought he was only fooling but when I got to-day’s globe I looked and saw his name in the casualities lists. I was counting so much on seeing him when I got to England and now he is gone

We expect to leave here on Friday for the east and soon sail but they haven’t told us just where. The G.C read out an order this morning saying it was a serious offence to divulge the secret and anyone caught doing it would be severly punished

Mr Holmes our Platoon Lieut. Came over this evening and we went out for a little walk and he was so nice. He said that if he could be any help to me any time he would be very glad to do so. Well we are having to fall now so I must close for now
