Dear Mrs. Platt,

I feel I must write and tell you how deeply I sympathize with you in your great sorrow. It came as a great shock even to us here and he will be an irreplaceable loss to the Battalion. All the boys in the section were awfully cut up, for he was always so considerate of them, and it was no formal regret that the sergeant voiced when he told us the news and remarked "We will never get another as good". Of course I will feel his loss more than most of them for he was not only my officer but the best of friends as well. Indeed the only thing one can derive comfort from is the thought that he died doing his duty to his country, and that it was mercifully quick and painless. With again deepest sympathy for you all, believe me.

Very sincerely yours,
Allen D. Harvey.
