Dear Bi.

Glad you had such a good time. You say Mat is with Ada give me her address I do not seem able to catch her at all. I am now
            Capt. Kaine MC
            O/C 6 Div Sniping Coy
            BEF
            France.
So am behind the lines for a time and will then only be in for 10 days at a time. I have 9 officers and 150 men so you see I have to work. Wish I could see some of those potatoes etc. you mention but [?] can get them. I am in good billets now and am trying to make them better so have comfort. Well I cannot think of any news so must close but I do like to hear from home. I cannot tell you what we do here for it would not do so as I do not talk French it does not give me a chance for news.

Best of Good Luck to All
Alex

[Editor’s note: The dating of this letter as 1917 has been done based on the written reference that Kaine, having already received the Military Cross, has been promoted to the rank of Captain (see London Gazette, #30310, p. 9988).]
