Winnipeg
December 21, 1916
Dear Madam.
The families of those who have enlisted in the service of the Empire are being remembered this year by the citizens of Winnipeg who send you this message, assuring you of their appreciation and gratitude. We believe that the wife who gives up her husband for active service had done an act of unrivalled patriotic sacrifice. We believe that the family who send a son as a soldier or a daughter as a nurse have performed a duty nobler than is possible to those who have only money to give. We congratulate ourselves that there are so many wives and families of this heroic type in Winnipeg, and regard them as on of our truest and richest civic assets. We are proud of those whom you have sent to the front, and proud of you for letting them go.
Please accept the enclosed contribution as an indication of our concern for your happiness and that of your children at Christmas-time. We trust that the small effort we have made to gladden the hearts of the soldiers’ little daughters and sons will be accepted as a gift of friends. May this Christmas be full of the spirit of Peace and Goodwill which He, whose birthday it is, showed on earth.
Yours faithfully
R. D. Waugh, Mayor.
