Reception to Returned Soldiers.

A public reception in honour of several of our brave boys who have recently returned from the front was held on Saturday evening last, in the town hall, in this village. Reeve B.W. Squire presided, and on behalf of the village and the community extended a hearty welcome to the four who were present, viz: Corp. Wellington Reynolds, Lance Corp. W. Pound, Pte. Roy Killingbeck and Sgt. Gideon Walker. Two others, Sgt. Graham and Pte. W. Andrews, were unable to be present.

Speeches were delivered by Mr. J.A. Sexsmith, member-elect for East Peterboro at the recent Dominion election, Rev. A.M. Irwin, Rev. J.B McCormack, and Councillor J.R. McKelvie. Musical numbers were contributed by Miss Maggie Mitchison, Mrs. F.B. Garlick and Miss Marjorie Johnson.

Mrs. B.W. Squire, vice Regent of the 40th Northumberland Chapter of the I.O.D.E. in the absence of the Regent Mrs. (Col) Birdsall presented each of the soldiers with a signet ring as a token of appreciation from that organization. Each of the men responded briefly, expressing their appreciation of the splendid reception accorded them and thanking the Daughters of the Empire for their gift and also for the many comforts previously received on the field. Sgt. Walker responded with a military song which was rendered in good style and was heartily applauded.
