Private John Hill Robertson was born on June 28, 1898 in Wellington, British Columbia to parents Andrew Gilchrist and Elizabeth Robertson.

Robertson was recruited to the 1st Depot Battalion, British Columbia Regiment on March 15, 1918.  He proceeded overseas aboard the SS Ajana in May of 1918 and was transferred to the 7th Battalion, with whom he served in England and France.  Hill was demobilized at the end of the war and was discharged in Revelstoke, British Columbia on April 24, 1919.
